Limited Emergency Bird Care for Sick and/or Injured Birds
Distinguishing a healthy bird from an unhealthy bird, as well as detecting injuries, is often difficult for the untrained eye. Any baby or adult bird that is obviously injured or debilitated in some way should be confined in a safe place before attempting to find help. Keep the bird in a safe, quiet place--away from children, noise and pets.Featherless babies, including those partially covered with down, must have an external source of heat. When held in the palm of your hand, the bird should be warmer than your hand.(A bird's body temperature is higher than ours.) We often use aquariums with screen lids and place a heating pad inside. Adjust the setting to low, maintaining ideal temperature of 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit. If you do not have a heating pad, a light bulb placed appropriately near the bird or a hot water bottle will suffice temporarily. Never place dishes of food or water with a nestling. A sick or injured bird needs prompt medical treatment and appropriate medication. Please contact a rehabilitator immediately.
