CYBERSPACE SENIORS
Cyberspace Seniors was created by Martha R. Gore in Tucson on February 3, 1996. It was specifically designed by seniors for seniors connected to the Internet and is dedicated to the purpose of teaching, learning and sharing about the Internet.
Martha R. Gore is the administrator and list manager and Ron Schenk is the assistant administrator and technical manager.
The membership is made up of a community--and by community we include the entire United States-- of beginning, as well as more experienced, knowledgeable, senior Internet users. Our members live all across the United States--on both coasts, the south, the middle west, and the west.
Cyberspace Seniors aim is to encourage and help senior users to learn, and enjoy their internet experience. There they will discover a "whole new world" of information and adventure.
We are all volunteers, embarking together on one of those adventures, by offering a helping hand to our fellow senior Internet travelers. Our only reward is the satisfaction of sharing, and helping where we can, not to mention the joy of learning about the Internet from others.
The place where we share this information is called a mail listserver and all exchanges of information are done by the use of e-mail. For example, when a member sends a question about the use of the Internet to Cyberspace Seniors at its e-mail address, all other members receive the message at the same time.
It is like sitting in front of the computer in your own home and sharing information with friends in many different places in the United States all at the same time.
We do not have a chat room, newsgroup or bulletin board at this time.
Cyberspace Seniors has a very simple and limited focus. It is intended to be a members "how to" community network for folks who wish to ask questions about, contribute to, and read about, the topic of using the Internet and their Computers.
There is no charge for membership in Cyberspace Seniors. Meetings are held whenever an interesting and informative program about the Internet is available. Announcements of meetings are posted in the Cyberspace Seniors and Savvy Seniors lists. From time to time, our meetings are open to the public on a limited seating basis. Members who do not live in Tucson have the same status as those who are in the geographic area and are polled in the list when questions or decision-making discussions arise.
We teach and learn about using e-mail handling programs, such as Eudora, and browsers, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer. We also exchange information about interesting sites on the Internet and current happenings that affect our use of the Web.
If you feel that you will benefit from or can contibute to the learning, teaching, and sharing about the Internet that is offered by Cyberspace Seniors, please send a request for a membership application to the List manager at ladybug@azstarnet.com
Upon receipt of your application, a volunteer member of Cyberspace Seniors will become your mentor, to help you learn about our protocol, and if needed, using the basics of e-mail and the Internet. When you and your mentor think you are ready to join our group, subscribing information will be sent to you.
Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered,
you will never grow.
