You're caller
i started picking locks in the 4th grade.
i read a book on the magician houdini who
was also an escape artist.
the houdini book showed me the basic tricks.
picking locks is very easy if you know
how to do it.
if a 4th grader can pick locks anyone can pick locks.
these are the basic locks i will cover here.
ward locks
you really dont pick ward locks.
what you do is make a master key that fits all ward locks.
and then use it to open any ward lock.
the key below is used to open a ward lock made by the MASTER LOCK COMPANY.
notice on the stem of the key there are three crosses or t's.
you make a master key by filing down the key to your ward lock.
file off the two middle T's only leaving the bottom T.
once its filed down correctly it will open any ward lock.
the key correctly filed looks like this.
when i was a little brat in grad school
most ward locks made by the MASTER lock company only used
the bottom T to open the lock.
to open this type slide the filed down key in and open the
lock like you normally do.
but some older ward locks used one of the middle T's to open the lock.
in this case you use you filed down key to find each T in the
lock and attempt to open that T.
you would use the key to find the bottom key and attempt to open it.
if that didnt work you would use the key to feel your way up and
open each of the middle T's until you found the T that open'ed
the lock.
i have found some MASTER LOCKS use several of the T's to
open the lock.
in the lock i have first i use the key to open the middle T.
then i use the key to open the bottom T and then the lock pops open.
i suspect that there are ward locks out there where several of the
T's must be turned at the same time.
in these cases this pick would not work.
ward lock's are not very common now days.
probably because they are very easy to pick,
and maybe because pin tumbler locks are cheeply made.
but in the old days before our time ward locks were very common.
pin tumbler locks and wafer tumbler locks
pin tumber locks usually have 3 or more sets of two brass pins in them.
your key moves the pairs of brass pins.
when the pins line up with the locks cylinder the lock will open.
wafer tumber locks work the same way but instead of having brass pins
they have flat metal wafers.
when the key pushes the wafers and they align with the locks cylinder
the lock opens.
wafer tumbler locks are cheep locks and very easy to pick.
you can usually open them just as quickly with a pick as you
can with a key.
when i say easy i showed my sisters kid who was at the time
in 5th grade how to pick pin tumbler locks.
it didnt take him 5 minutes to be able to say look mom
i can open the front door with out a key.
pin tumbler locks are better quality lock.
if you new at picking they are a little harder to open then
wafer tumbler locks.
but if your good at picking or have a lock picking gun they
can usually be opened just as easily and quickly as
wafer tumber locks.
wafer and pin tumbler locks are both picked the same way.
you use a lever or wrench to turn the lock as if you were
opening it with a key.
the key here is justing using a little leverage. dont twist
it too hard.
at the same time your twisting the cylinder you use a
pick to bounce the pins up and down.
as the pins are bounced around one by one they get stuck
in the open position because of your twisting of the cyclinder.
when all the pins get stuck in the open position
the wrench or lever your using on the cylinder will usually
turn the lock open just like a key does.
this site is under construction and i have to add more details
here
pin tumbler locks with the round keys
I have seen picks for these and they are rather pricey.
$40-$60 for a pick that picks only one type of key.
The person I spoke to at DEFCON says they are even easier to pick then
regular pin tumbler locks.
After I makes some picks and play with the keys I will update
my web page with what i find.
At the DEFCON conference I learned how to make a simple
pick for these pin tumbler locks with round keys.
The pick is made by grinding grooves on the outside of
old key.
Use a tool like a mototool from dremal to cut the grooves.
One groove is ground for each of the pins in the lock.
To pick the lock you put the key in the lock and turn it.
This is like putting a tension wrench into a regular lock.
Remember just light tension.
Next take a piece of wire needle, or paper clip and shove
it thru one of the grooves.
This wire is used to push down the tumbler until it locks
into place.
after picking one tumbler move on to the next tumbler.
combination locks. the kind on safes.
well thats all it is hollywood movie stuff.
it aint that easy in real life.
in fact these locks are very hard to pick.
i read a book on how to pick them and
the procedure is so complex and time
consuming that i didnt
bother to learn it.
the basic procedure to pick them is to
find where the holes on the tumblers are
and where the knobs are on the tumblers.
you do this like they do in the movies
by listening and feeling the lock.
then you draw out what looks like a
bio-rythim and use that map to guide
you to what the combination might be.
it was hard, time consuming and not easy.
car locks
you use a slim jim or long flat piece of metal
to open the door.
you slide the slim jim down into the car door
from where the window meets the weather stripping
on the door.
you then search for a lever to pull on or push on which will
unlock the door.
sometimes finding where the lever is and which way
to pull it is very easy. sometimes its a bitch.
most tow truck drivers, and locksmiths who open car doors
carry a book which shows
how to use the slim jim to open the door on
every model of car made.
i think the price range of the book is about $50.
you can buy these books from locksmith supply
stores.
starting cars with out a key
older cars only had a key to start them.
on newer cars you have a key and an electrical resistor
in the key.
even if the key fits the lock, the lock wont open unless
the resister on the key matches the value the lock expects.
the lock tests the resistor by running some electricty thru
the key and testing if the correct amount of current (milliamps)
flows thru the key.
usually if you have the right key but wrong resistor in the key.
the cars computer will not let you try to open it for some period
of time.
locksmiths hate this because it slows them down.
car theifs usually just rip the locks out to steal the car
and dont bother to pick or cleanly open the lock.
handcuffs
the amazing thing about handcuffs is one key fits
any hand cuff.
in america almost all cops
and goverment thugs use
peerless handcuffs or
smith & wesson handcuffs.
the same key will open either model handcuff.
hand cuff keys have two parts.
the first part is the key its self.
the second part is a little metal rod on the key.
when you handcuff a person you can push the cuffs
closer and closer to the persons wrists.
the little metal rod is used to lock the cuffs so
you cant make them any tighter.
on the peerless cuffs you push the metal rod into
a hole and it locks the rachet in the cuff.
on the
smith & wesson
cuffs you use the metal rod to push a thin wire in the cuff
which then locks the rachet in the cuff.
the key turns in two directions on both versions of cuffs.
turn the key in one direction to unlock the cuffs.
if a cuff has had its rachet locked you 1st turn the key
in the oppsite direction to unlock the rachet. then you
turn the key in the other direction to unlock the cuff.
HANDCUFFS ARE AMAZINGLY SIMPLE TO OPEN WITH OUT KEYS
You can use a safety pin, paper clip, bobby pin, or piece
of wire to either shim open or pick handcuffs almost as
quickly as you can open them with a key.
The first method is to shim open the handcuffs.
You can do this with a saftey pin, SMALL paper clip, or
a piece of stiff wire such as the small sizes of piano
wire you buy in hobby stores.
Handcuffs have a metal part that swings around.
This metal part has a series of notches in it on the
end.
The other part of the handcuff has a rachet in it.
The rachet in combination with the notches on the
other part allow the handcuff to move in one direction only.
towards the prisioners arm.
By shoving a safty pin or wire between the notches and
the rachet you can shim open the cuffs very easily.
Sometimes you can just shove the wire in and the cuffs
will open up.
The cuffs dont just open. You have press your arm against
them to force them off. but its just normal pressure.
you dont need superhuman strength.
Other times you have to shove the wire in.
Next you get the arm to move in a few notches.
This forces the wire between the notches and the
ratchet.
Usually it only takes one to three clicks to
have the wire in deep enough to get the cuffs to open.
BE CAREFULL if you use a wire too big you can cause
the cuffs to jam up and the only way to get them off
is sawing them off (well there are easier ways but the
cuffs have to be taken apart).
Typically this happens when i use a bobby pin to
shim open Peerless handcuffs. The Peerless cuffs
will jam up.
But on Smith Wession handcuffs a bobby pin shims
the cuffs open perfectly.
PICKING HANDCUFFS WITH A BOBBY PIN IS AMAZINGLY SIMPLE
Picking handcuffs with a bobby pin is amazingly simple.
You can even use the handcuffs to make the bobby pin into
a pick.
bend the bobby pin so it looks like this
you can use the keyhole on the handcuffs to bend the bobby pin
if your in a jam. its very easy.
try it.
once you do it a few times its very easy to open the handcufs
with the bobby pin pick. in fact you can do it just as easily
and quickly with the bobby pin as you can with a real key.
but the first few times it hard to open it with the bobby
pin pick.
so practice doing it a few times and dont give up.
a pick can be make to open handcuffs by cutting the top
off any handcuff key and you can carry it around in your
shoe.
I have not done this but read it works.
If I ever get around to trying it i will update
this document and delete it if it doesnt work
or tell you how well it worked if it works.
you can make you own handcuff pick by taking a brass
tube in a ball point pen and either soldering or using
super glue to add on the key part.

The reasons why i got into trouble are not important.
But i got my act together and stopped getting into trouble.
I didnt stop getting into trouble for any moral or great reason.
I quit getting into trouble because i knew that if i didnt
the goverment would lock me in jail forever.
But to get thru life it helps if you follow the golden rule.
If you steal peoples stuff they will either want to beat you up
, kill you, and probably steal all their stuff back plus more.
So if you follow the golden rule you never have people pissed
off at you who want to harm you.
Plus if you always treat people fairly
over time they will usually treat you fairly even
if they initially seam like assholes.
I cant really say what path you should take to suceed.
In my case i was a goverment leach and got a bunch of
government loans and grants which helped me get a
degree in computer science.
(which was NOT very libertarian!
but i have changed my ways and will
never again accept money from the government)
and every since i got my degree i have been a grossly
over paid software engineer. plus i have a lot of
fun writting software and working with robotics.
ok im sorry i worked on a few
jobs for the government! i have learned and
refuse to accept jobs for the goverment any more.
the only problem i have now is that often i
work for large companys that design electronic
weapon systems which are used by the goverment to kill
people. or i write software that is used to
control robots or machines that build these
electronic weapons for the government.
fun with the Salt River Project
I can only say this because the statute of limitations
on these crimes i commited while i was in grade school,
high school and college has ran out many years ago.
In Phoenix Arizona it doesn't rain very much.
5 inches a year in the west part of the valley.
10 inches a year in the east valley near the Superstition Mountains.
And about 7 inches in central Phoenix at Sky Harbor Airport.
While you wouldn't think you have good farm land in the desert
the dry Arizona deserts have some of the best farm land in
the world.
You can grow stuff year round cuz it doesn't snow.
And since it doesnt rain the farmers here have irrigation ditches
and canels to bring
water to their fields and crops. These are built and run by the
Salt River Project or SRP as locals call them.
To control the water flow there are many gates on the canals.
Before I came along each gate along had a padlock on it.
The pads locks were made by the MASTER LOCK COMPANY and had
the number 2003 on the lock.
To stop or start the flow of water you would unlock the
Pad lock and remove the chain that locked a wheel that raises
and lowers the gate.
Turn the wheel clockwize and the gate rises and more water flows.
Turn the wheel counter-clockwize and the gate lowers and less water flows.
In the very hot Arizona summer kids like to play in these canals.
I was one of them. When its 118F degrees (47 C) a canal is
a nice place for a kid in the desert to be.
It cools you down.
When i was in the 6th grade i happened to find a one of these
canal locks open. Someone working
for SRP forgot to lock it.
My eyes lit up with glee. I knew if stole the lock I could
take it home and make
a key to open it.
I took home the lock and took it apart.
The hardest part is ripping off the steel armor.
The part required to make a new key for the
lock is the brass tumbler that you shove the key in.
That tumbler contains 4 or 5 holes in it.
In each of the holes two brass bins sit held in place
by a sprint.
When the key pushes the pins up and both bins are in
alignment with the outside of the tumbler the lock
opens.
I borrowed some key blanks from the local K-Mart (Hayden & McDowell store in
Scottsdale). OK maybe stole is a better word.
For each pin in the lock I filed the blank key with a jewelers file
until the pin's top was just resting at the top of the tumbler.
File key. Stick key in lock. See how much of pin still sticks out.
Repeat till done.
File key. Stick key in lock. See how much of pin still sticks out.
File key. Stick key in lock. See how much of pin still sticks out.
Then I took the key down to the irrigation ditch on Hayden Road and
Palm Lane in Scottsdale and tested it. It worked. Borrowed my 1st
SRP lock.
I made copies of the key at K-Mart and sold them to most of my friends
at cost. We were all paperboys and viewed these SRP locks as free locks
for our bikes.
When SRP became aware of all these missing locks from its canal system
they thought someone was cutting the locks off.
So they begin replacing the stolen locks with Master Locks with the
good old 2003 number but with a hardend steel bolt.
As paper boys we loved the new locks even better.
Cool these new locks are hardend steel and people can't
steal them from us even if they had bolt cutters or a hack saw.
Cuz bolt cutters don't work very well on hardend steel locks
and hack saw blades are quickly dulled when attempting to cut
a hardend steel lock.
After we stole a large number of these hardened steel locks SRP
realized that someone had the key to their locks.
To stop us they started using a new Master lock. Same model lock but
different key.
And this time they got a lock with out a number on the bottom.
If you're a locksmith you can use that number to figure out
how to cut a key by looking it up in books published by
Master Locks.
Thats why they used a lock with out a number on it.
SRP's plan worked for a while.
The new locks were made of hardened steel.
So I couldn't cut one off and make a key for it.
That was for a short time until a SRP employee
locked up a irrigation ditch gate with two locks.
One of the locks was the old lock which I had a
key for. One of the locks was for the new lock
which I didn't have a key for.
This caused glee to come to my eyes.
I opened the lock I had a key for.
I took the the chain with the attached lock which i didnt have a key for.
Taking apart a MASTER LOCK company pad lock is done like this.
First you use a grinder to remove eight to 10 rivits on the
bottom or key side of the lock.
Next you use a screw driver (or even better a cold chisel) and hammer to pry off the bottom
one or two steel plates holding the brass stuff that you shove
the key in.
You must mark which tumblers came from which hole.
And which tumbler was the bottom tumbler in each hole.
To make a key for the lock you use the round brass cylinder
that you shove the key into and each of the tumblers
that was on the bottom.
Shove blank key into lock.
Put bottom tumbler into one of the holes.
Its probably best to start with a hole on the end.
Repete these steps until done.
Measure or eyeball distance tumbler sticks
out of cylinder.
Use jewelers file to file down key for distance
tumbler sticks out of lock.
Stick key back into lock after filing.
When you have that tumbler working
move on to the next tumbler and
repeat for all 4 or 5 tumblers in the lock
As paper boys we liked this now we could
get free locks from SRP with two different
keys.
From sixth grade on into college i always
viewed locks as free commiditys supplied
by the Salt River Project.
Need a lock. Just find the nearest irrigation
ditch and use one of my two keys to take the
lock on it off.
When I got out of college i realized they could
put me in jail for taking the Salt River Projects
locks so I stopped taking them.
I never used my keys to the Salt River Projects
canal system to do any harm but a friend of mine
used to like to flood out little league games.
In the summer when water was flowing in the canals
he would open the gates and cause an unscheduled
irrigating of the baseball fields at Paiute
elementry school in Scottsdale.
I dont think he liked baseball or school very much.
His name was Richard Fenton.
He died of a drug overdose in Hawaii when he was a Marine.
fun with the Arizona Public Service
and toms stuff at frys
and what mr heuy did for me
I can only say this because the statute of limitations
on these crimes i commited while i was in grade school,
high school have long since run out.
Both the Arizona Public Service (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP)
provide electric service to the Phoenix area.
I messed with the APS because the provided electric service
to the cities of Scottsdale and Tempe where i grew up.
i grew up and attended goverment run high schools in arizona.
the first thing i noticed when being forced to
take a PE class (Physical Education) in high school was the
combination lock they issued me to lock up my
clothes had a key on the back of it.
the key wasnt just any key. it was a master key so the
teachers could use a regular key to unlock any combination
lock.
to my joy every gym lock in the scottsdale school district
used the same key.
so the first chance i got i lost my gym lock and took it
home and tore it apart and made a key to fit it.
i could not find a blank key in the stores that would
fit the lock so i ended up using a filing down a knife
blade to make a key i could use to open these gym locks.
i made the key the same way i made all the other keys
i have talked about.
i could have had a lot of fun switching around
combination locks in the boys locker room but
i never did that.
i was on the gymnastics team and i did make a lot of
use out of it when we visited other scottsdale schools
for our gym meets.
it was cool to have gym shirts from as many schools as possible
and i used my master key to aquire a good collection of shirts
from schools we visited. for that matter the rest of the
team used my key.
again the statute of limitations has long since expried
on this one.
razor saws
you can open most pad locks in under 30 seconds by
cutting thru the bolt.
if your foolish enought to attack a pad lock made out of
hardened steel you will notice you razor saw blade is quiclky
ruined and the lock is not cut at all.
razor saws are thin enough that you can ofter slide
them in the side of a door and cut off the bolt keeping
the door locked.
bolts made of brass or steel can be cut off.
Plus razor saw blades fit easily in your back pocket.
the XACTO TOOL COMPANY makes razor saw blades.
they can be bought at almost any hobby shop.
some hardware stores sell them.
stores like home depot usually sell them too.
if you have seen cheep bike locks these are usually ward locks.
almost all cheep locks are ward locks.
these are the most common in home & business door locks,
good quality pad locks, car doors.
These are the types of locks you see on coke machines,
candy machines, washing machines, and other machines that usually
take money from you and give you some product for your cash.
you have all seen it in a movie where a crook
put his ear to a combination lock and then
quickly picks it listening to the sounds.
to get into a car you usually dont pick the lock.
i have not played with the locks use in car ignition systems.
and dont know how to pick them.
handcuffs have silly keys.

Another place to buy handcuffs is in GUN STORES
for those of you who live in states where the government
has not disarmed you. Most gun stores in Arizona also
carry handcuffs. But the price is higher then quatermaster.
you can make your own handcuff keys
from a the brass ink tubes used
in ballpoint pens.
OK I admit it when I was a kid i got into a lot of trouble.
Razor saws are a crude but effective way to
open pad locks that are not made out of hardend steel.
and slice thru dead bolts on doors.
